HCISD Secures Second Consecutive Grant for Project Red Initiative

Written By: Alma Rock

Harlingen, TX— For the second consecutive year, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD) has secured a $10,000 grant to support its groundbreaking initiative, Project Red: Keeping Our Girls in School. Period. The primary objective of Project Red is to ensure that menstrual and female hygiene products are readily accessible to any HCISD student that needs them.

Project Red was launched during the 2022-2023 school year by FACE Social Worker Adriana Garcia. At the heart of this initiative lies a simple yet profound principle: menstrual products are essential hygiene items, and no student should ever be forced to miss school due to the inability to afford them.

Mrs. Garcia stated, “Our students should be focusing on their education, not worrying about whether they can afford menstrual products. We are committed to ensuring that students don’t miss school because of their menstrual cycle.”

With this grant, school nurses will be equipped with menstrual products to distribute to students at their respective schools throughout the school year and even during summer programs. Furthermore, a portion of the funds will be allocated to stock the HCISD Clothing Closet with menstrual and female hygiene products, ensuring that students have access to these necessities at home.

Elvia Loera, HCISD Head Nurse, will oversee this grant. She emphasizes, “Project Red’s mission extends beyond providing essential products; it’s about empowering students by eliminating barriers to their education. HCISD is dedicated to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to excel academically without the worry of basic necessities.”
