Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath visited Bowie Elementary School last week, where he saw first-hand the fun students and teachers are having inside HCISD classrooms.

Commissioner Morath was highly impressed by Harlingen CISD’s early literacy curriculum and initiatives.

First graders in Laura Lemarr’s class showcased how well they can read and write at such an early age. Other students spoke with Commissioner Morath about small-group instruction as well as coding initiatives happening on campus.

“Raise your hand if you can tell me which word has a suffix,” Mrs. Lemarr asked her class while pointing to multiple words projected on a screen.

An excited student quickly raised his hand. “I know,” he said. “Helping!”

Moving through their lessons, all students were eager to learn during the phonics session on Wednesday afternoon.

The first graders then took a group photo with the commissioner before he departed for the day.

“We were excited to have him tour our campus and visit our classrooms and witness all the exciting things happening (within Harlingen CISD),” said Principal Jaymie Galan.
