Holiday 2014 Message:

Greetings HCISD family, we have achieved much transformation in these short months. Our students are excelling and campuses are thriving. Together we have made 2014 a monumental year and, as in our prior year, there is much to be proud of.

This October, Zavala Elementary was selected to receive an Apple grant as part of the ConnectED program. The award will enable Zavala to provide a comprehensive 1:1 technology solution for every student and teacher, including Apple hardware, software, and services.

Our most recent initiatives aligned to the Strategic Plan are attracting national recognition. In November, our school district was one of 100 from across the country to be invited to the White House where the president recognized us for the transformational work we are doing to close the digital gap. We should be honored as a district to be identified at the national level as a leader for the Future Ready Call to Action.

Earlier this month, HCISD made history with the opening of the Harlingen School of Health Professions. The inauguration of this outstanding facility marks the growing opportunities and choices our students will have to get a jump-start on a career in medicine and the medical school process. The over 200 students entering the campus will continue on the path toward global achievement.

With the projected opening of our Aquatics Center this school year, we will launch the Safely Educating Aquatic Learners (SEAL) Swim Program, which is aimed at providing all second grade students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of swimming and water safety. We are excited to see the positive impact this initial year will have on our students and the opportunities it will create to encourage an active lifestyle.

Each of these achievements is remarkable, and as a whole, they are a testament of success few school districts can equal. Most importantly, these milestones are a reflection of the immeasurable talent and commitment that our administrators, educators and staff project every day. I am also grateful to our HCISD families for their constant support; I am very proud to serve beside you.

As we prepare to enjoy the holiday break, I urge you to make the most of this special time and take the opportunity to reflect and share the blessings of the season with friends and family. I hope you have a blessed Christmas and a joyous holiday season.

Let us return with the continued determination and commitment to our students’ futures to make 2015 a productive and positive year for our schools and Harlingen community.

Thank you all for your time and talent in building world-class schools.
