High school track races past the competition at Area meet

Track athletes from Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South continued to beat the clock at the Region IV- 5A Area Meet at Weslaco’s Bobby Lackey Stadium on April 20.

With many of the HHS and HHSS athletes qualifying for the Conference 5A Region IV Regional Spring Meet to be held at Heroes Stadium at University of Texas in San Antonio on April 27.

The HHS boys’ team earned the top spot of Area Champions during the competition with nine athletes qualifying for the region meet. RJ Villanueva placed first in the triple jump and second in long jump. Hayden Flores placed first in pole vault. The 400-meter and 800- meter relay team placed first and second, respectively. Roman Hernandez placed first in the 110 hurdles while Ralph Garcia placed third. Hernandez also placed first in the 300 hurdles along with second place award winner Bryan Elder. Marcos Medina placed first in the 400-meter run. Chris Rosales placed second in the 200-meter race.

From the HHS girls’ team, Cassie Divin qualified for the regional meet after placing second in the 400-meter race.

From the HHSS boys’ team, Kenny Zamorano placed second in discus. Josue Gonzalez qualified with his second place win in the high jump. Luis Sanchez reached a personal best in the pole vault by increasing his jump by a foot, earned third place, and a spot in the Area competition. Jorge Garcia placed fourth in the 110 hurdles. Also qualifying were Nick Garcia, Oscar Garza, Jesse Martinez and Jerry Campos in the 800-meter relay. They placed third with their best time this year and have cut five seconds from their run since the start of the season. Samuel Mendiola earned fourth in the 400-meter event.

The HHSS girls track team qualified Mariah Noyola for her 800 meter and 400 meter run and Anamaria Rodriguez in the 100-meter hurdles.
