Three Early College High School students brought back a first place trophy this month for winning the 26th annual Harlingen Corporate Killer Spelling Bee hosted by the Literacy Center of Harlingen.
Seniors Aaron Vidaurri and Daniel Saucedo as well as Junior Jehovah Garcia advanced to the Harlingen Corporate Killer Spelling Bee after competing in campus-wide competitions. The trio has been participating in spelling bees since they were in elementary and middle school. The students practiced spelling after school for three months in preparation for the competition.
Sponsored by Lone Star National Bank, the competition helps support the Literacy Center of Harlingen. Their win resulted in a $500 donation to the Literacy Center of Harlingen. With the winning word “tchotchke,” Harlingen CISD is certainly proud of their hard work and commitment. The three students are currently on track to graduate from ECHS with up to 50 plus hours of college credit in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.
“We are proud of our students for their efforts in pursuing a challenge that many shy away from and also excelling at it,” said Alias Ortega, a teacher at ECHS. “Congratulations to the students on their first place win!”
