ECA named 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood finalist

Harlingen CISD Early Childhood Academy has been selected as one of the finalists for the 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award.

District administrators surprised teachers and staff with the announcement in January.

When I look at this campus and what you all have done, it is just the epitome of what it should be for early childhood,” Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Lori Romero said. “The way you deal with discipline, academics, engagement, outdoor learning spaces, everything you do is so intentional and so purposeful.”

Five early childhood providers from across the State were selected as finalists based on applications submitted in December.

“My heart is just obviously exploding with joy,” Director of Early Literacy Bertha Perea said. “Thank you all so much, and to our board, who is just so innovative and trusts us and knows what’s best for our kids.”

As a finalist, ECA will receive a $5,000 grant to apply toward enhancing existing Kinder Readiness activities or creating new programs.

In March, a panel of judges will visit ECA classrooms and meet with Harlingen CISD, ECA, and community partners to determine a winner. In May, H-E-B will announce one of the five Early Childhood finalists as the winner and award them a $25,000 grant.

“Just by being nominated by H-E-B and going through such a rigorous process, it says a lot about this campus,” Superintendent Dr. J.A. Gonzalez said. “I want to extend my gratitude on behalf of the entire HCISD family and our Board. Thank you all for everything that you do, and I encourage you to keep doing the great work.”

The Early Childhood Award is designed to support public or private schools that focus on the care and education of children under the age of five.

Created in 2002, the H E B Excellence in Education Awards are designed to honor outstanding public school professionals and to thank them for their dedication and commitment.
