College Showcase: South’s Joshua Anderson

What is your career goal?
Pre-Law and hopefully go to law school and become a lawyer.

What teacher or teachers have influenced you the most during your time in high school?
Ms. Deborah Vaughn, she was my AP English III teacher last year. She was really good at teaching me about writing and different techniques. That inspired me to like words and to use rhetoric to persuade people. She’s really someone that inspired me and helped me appreciate literature.

Describe a school experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
This year I’ve been involved with many leadership positions in different organizations. I was the president of FCA, president of NHS, and vice president of student council. It helped me learn how to manage time and how to work with the other officers towards a common goal.

What types of community service have you participated in? What did you learn from that experience? How has it benefited you as a person and/or shaped your future.
I’m an Eagle Scout so I had to develop and lead a project that was over 200 hours just on my own, but together as a team, it was over 1,000 man hours. We built a tricycle track at a day care center. First we planned the area and worked with builders. We plowed an open field, took out all the grass, poured cement, installed sprinklers, a flowerbed and grass. This helped me develop my leadership skills. It’s not easy to get 20 or 30 people and say this is what we’re going to do and this is how we’re going to do it. That was a great opportunity to teach me how to be a leader.

What is your motivation?
I come from a pretty smart family. My dad was a valedictorian at Harlingen High School. There have always been high expectations of me. I also have a lot of personal motivation. Maybe it’s difficult now to be working hard and to be involved in other organizations, but when I think about the higher goal, it will all be worth it.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully, I will be working in law if that’s what I ultimately decide to go into or my second choice, which is marketing. Maybe I’ll be working for a marketing firm or a non-profit. Ultimately, I’d like to have a job that puts me in a position to help out other people.
