From Oct. 20 to Oct. 26, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District will celebrate Character Counts Week, which recognizes the importance of building a strong character throughout a student’s school years.

During the week, the Six Pillars of Character will be incorporated into lessons on how students can apply them in real life situations. Pillars include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

The week was started in 1992 when a summit was hosted by the Josephson Institute, the parent organization of CHARAC- TER COUNTS!, in Aspen, Colorado. A group of leading ethicists, educators, and youth-service professionals convened to develop a common language of core ethical values that transcend religious, political, and socioeconomic differences.
