On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 5 and 6, Sylvan Learning and Harlingen CISD celebrated the National Week of the Young Child with a themed literary event, Magic of Reading: Oh the places reading can take you!

“We are thankful for Sylvan Learning Centers of the Rio Grande Valley and their support for early childhood literacy,” said Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos. “In providing a strong foundation through reading, we place our students on the path toward success in elementary, secondary and higher education. We hope this event sparks a passion for reading and gets our kindergarten students excited for learning.”

Over 1400 kindergarteners from Harlingen CISD and neighboring private schools attended the event. Two students from Harlingen High School South dazzled the children with a performance of Charlotte’s Web. Curious George and Elmo also made a special appearance to talk to the children about their adventures through reading. A magician was also on hand to delight the students with his sleights of hand.

As lead sponsor of the event, Sylvan shared story time, and a friendly dinosaur helped the students dig for fossils. Sylvan also lead the children in arts and craft activities and provided each child with a goody bag.
