Middle school Speech and Debate teams receive national recognitions

The Vela Middle School and Gutierrez Middle School of Arts and Sciences Speech and Debate teams competed in the National Speech and Debate Association Middle School Tournament on June 7-9.

With nearly 1,000 middle schoolers from across the nation, NSDA Middle School Nationals consisted of 172 schools competing from across the country.

Marlee Garza and Catalina Cabello-Corona from Vela Middle School made HCISD history by being the first two National Speech and Debate Champions for the district.

Gutierrez Middle School of Arts and Sciences was recognized as a Top 5 Middle School in the Nation and received the Speech Schools of Excellence Award.
