Harlingen High School South senior, Idali Vasquez lifted a combined weight of 870 pounds at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet, earning fifth place overall.
“At state, my total was 870 and so my squat was 365, my bench was 160, and my deadlift was 345,” Vasquez said.
She competed against the best lifters in class 6A from the entire state of Texas at the THSWPA State Meet in March. Earning fifth place at this competition makes her one of the strongest female lifters in the state.
“I feel so proud and so blessed and honored to be able to represent South like this,” Vasquez said.
Along with breaking personal records, Vasquez also made school history by being the first female powerlifter to advance to the THSWPA Regional Meet. Her combined lift of 825 pounds at the regional meet allowed her the opportunity to compete at the state level.
“I want to thank my coaches, Coach Cortez and Coach Esquivel, for always pushing me to be the best and always pushing me to do more than I thought I could,” Vasquez said. “They are always there to encourage me at the end of my lift. They were the best support I had.”
