Students on the swim team at Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South are headed to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Regional Swimming Competition after an outstanding performance at the district meet on Jan 31.
HHS had nine students and HHSS had 15 students qualify to compete at the Regional Swim Meet on Feb. 7th.
From HHS, in the 200-medley relay, Seton Uhlhorn, Luis DeLaFuente, William Farley, Julian Deleon, Celeste Taniguchi, and Hector Castaneda qualified in this event. Individually, Taniguchi qualified in the 100 breaststroke. DeLaFuente, Farely, Deleon, Uhlhorn, Cynthia Inglett, and Ephraim Flores qualified in the 400 freestyle relay. Georgia Newell also qualified in her respective division.
Jacquelynn Hulings, Inglett, and Uhlhorn also qualified in the 200 freestyle relay. Uhlhorn also qualified in the 50 freestyle. Taniguchi also qualified in the 200 individual medley. Uhlhorn and Taniguchi are also qualifiers from this year’s Academic All American Swim team.
From HHSS, from the 200 medley girls relay Jessica Watson, Aransas Haley, Michelle, Chino and Vanessa Sanchez qualified. Zachary Hopkins, Josh Diaz, Jose Lopez, and Fernando Chavez qualified in the 200-medley boys relay.
The qualifiers from the 200 free girls relay were Haley, Jordan Pemelton, Chino, and Watson. Andres Hinojosa, Diaz, Lopez, and Chavez also qualified in the 200 Free Boys Relay. Alissandra Ayala, Cassandra Rubio, Alexis Mulkey and Vanessa Sanchez qualified in the 400 free girls relay. The qualifiers from the 400 boys relay were Hinojosa, Leonel Valdez, Roberto Guerra and Zachary Hopkins.
Students will be competing at the Region meet for a chance to head to the state competition
