Students and their families and district and school administrators filled an area near the entrance of Gillman Chevrolet Harlingen for the annual Drive for Perfect Attendance event that was held in May.
Qualifying sophomores, juniors, and seniors with perfect attendance across the district were entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of the prizes which included a MacBook Pro, a Microsoft Surface Pro, an iPad Mini, ten $250 gift cards, and the grand prize: a 2022 Chevy Trax.
Alarie Garcia, a junior at Harlingen High School South was announced the winner of the 2022 Chevy Trax.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect anything,” Garcia said. “I thought I was just going to sit here and get maybe like a gift card or something, but I did not expect to get the car at all. It feels great. Just knowing that going to school every single day just led to a car. So, it’s nice. Always go to school. You are doing it for yourself, for your good, for your future, and it can pay off in the end.”
Garcia’s parents beamed with excitement.
“We’d hoped she’d get something,” Garcia’s father, Alvaro Garcia said. “My mom was saying ‘Well hopefully she wins at least a computer or something,’ but we are just very thankful, very blessed that she was able to win this car.”’
The last Drive for Perfect Attendance was held in 2020, and it was held virtually.
“Today was a very exciting day because we were able to bring back the Drive for Perfect Attendance event to our store,” Gillman Chevrolet General Manager David Amaya said. “There was a lot of excitement. Just from seeing all the parents, all the educators, and all the supporters be here. It was a big lift for me and for our whole team, even our partners from Chevrolet that attended.”
That evening, several students also received awards for a lifetime of perfect attendance.
