To keep students’ minds active in the summer, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District is hosting a week dedicated to reading.
HCISD is hosting its second annual Family Literacy Week from June 17 through June 21. The events aim to raise awareness of the importance for all ages to continue reading throughout the summer. To get the entire Harlingen community in on the fun, students and their families are encouraged to attend.
The event will be held at the district’s administration building, 407 N. 77 Sunshine Strip, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Throughout the week, a new activity will be presented each day, which focuses on a theme. Subjects include Readers are Leaders on June 17, Gladys Porter Zoo, which will showcase live animals, on June 18, Star Wars on June 19, Comic Book Club on June 20 and Summer on Stage on June 21. There will also be a daily book fair hosted during each day.
Along with the activities, students will be presented with books to take home to continue the reading fun. Over 500 books for all ages were donated by HEB.
