Ben Milam welcomes Houston Astros for day of reading

The sound of cheers and spirited chants filled the air at Ben Milam Elementary as the students geared up for a morning of baseball and stories on Jan. 23.

Members of the Houston Astros stopped by the campus for a day of fun during their 2013 CAREavan tour.

Nearly 60 first grade students gathered to enjoy the company of players and alumni. Visitors included Carlos Corporan, Jose Cruz, Lucas Harrell, Jeff Luhnow and Alex Trevino. Students were anxious for the arrival of the baseball players, and wore paper baseball hats they made in class to greet each of the players.

“The students were really excited,” said Rosie Cobarrubias, principal at Ben Milam. “They wore their hats yesterday. I don’t think they will stop wearing them until they tear apart.”

The baseball stars spoke to the students about their positions in the Astros, and encouraged students to continue with their education. They showcased the fun of literacy by reading Curious George Plays Baseball.

To honor the school’s Dual Language Academy, the players and alumni read in both English and Spanish.

While reading the story, the players and alumni often took the time to explain the different terms used in baseball. Students remained silent until their special visitors offered to answer any questions the students had.

As an extra perk, each student received an autographed photo of all the players and alumni.

The visit was part of a 14-city tour. Astros players, alumni and staff visited schools, hospitals and military bases. This is the second year they visit HCISD.
