H-E-B recently released the names of the finalists for large and small school districts, early childhood education facilities, and public school boards for its 2018 Excellence in Education Awards.

The Harlingen CISD was one of five districts announced as finalists in the Large School District category of the Awards.

“We are honored and humbled to be named as finalists in the Large School District category of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards,” said Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos. “This accomplishment speaks to the remarkable things taking place at HCISD and is an honor for us all to take pride in. It’s all about creating choices and opportunities for our students. I want to thank our teachers for doing incredible work in the classroom every day, our amazing students, as well as the partnerships with parents and the community.”

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards celebrates public school professionals whose leadership and dedication inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

“It is a great honor to be recognized in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards,” said Board of Trustees President George McShan. “This award exemplifies the quality education we are providing our students at HCISD. This is what can happen when we partner and collaborate with stakeholders – parents and community. I commend all of our administrators, teachers, and staff for leading by example and teaching our students to dream big because anything is possible no matter where they’re from.”

Each finalist in the large district and early childhood categories will receive $5,000, and $2,500 for finalists in the small district category.

A panel of judges will select winners through district visits and meetings with administrators, faculty, parents, and community members. Their focus will be to give prominence to the best practices in the state.

The winning large district will receive an award of $100,000, and the winning small district will receive $50,000. An early childhood facility will receive $25,000, and if a school board is selected to receive a special judges award, they can receive up to $25,000 in the form of a grant to the school district they represent.

This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on May 6, 2018, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Houston.

Each year, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards presents more than $800,000 in cash prizes to deserving teachers, principals, school districts and early childhood facilities and school boards, making it the largest monetary award program for educators in the state.
