Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Warren Tichenor, received a big welcome during his latest visit to his former campus Austin Elementary on Sept. 20.

Tichenor, who attended Austin in the late 1960s, was greeted by his former first-grade teacher, Tony Taylor, as well as students holding handmade signs celebrating the ambassador’s generous contributions to the school.

“Warren Tichenor has been very generous the last four years in several projects to enhance our school,” said principal Magda Gonzalez. “I want him to know how thankful all the staff and students are at Austin. This is also a great opportunity to teach our students to be thankful and appreciative.”

Over the past years, the former ambassador has gifted the school with a brand-new sidewalk, three HD televisions, a sound system for the cafeteria, a digital marquee, and a donation of books.

“It’s something I felt like I wanted to do and I’m glad I did it,” said Tichenor. “Now as an adult, thinking back, I am very grateful to the school for getting me off on the right foot including my first-grade teacher.”

Students showed their appreciation with a special tribute to Tichenor that included videos by the Austin News team and special performances by the fifth-grade choir.
