Dr. Art Cavazos has been named 2017 Superintendent of the Year by Texas Parent Teacher Association, a statewide association of over 489,000 members.
The nomination was submitted by 2015-2017 Harlingen City Council PTA President, Beatrice Cruz.
“In the past two years serving as Council President, I was able to see first-hand the unwavering support and sincere dedication Dr. Cavazos has for this entire district,” Cruz said. “His commitment to supporting our local PTAs and Council, continues tirelessly. I nominated him for this award because he is leading the way to a brighter future for our community. I am thrilled that the rest of the state will have a chance to see what we see every day in Harlingen, an honorable man who truly cares for our students and community.”
Dr. Cavazos’ nomination made a lasting impression on Texas PTA. They awarded him the SOTY title in recognition of his efforts of promoting student success through family and community engagement. Texas PTA appreciates his ongoing support of the program and mission to make every child’s potential a reality.
“By being involved in our students’ PTSAs and supporting PTA organizations across the district, we are seeing how they are making a positive difference in education,” Dr. Cavazos said. “It is an honor to be named 2017 Texas PTA Superintendent of the Year. With the continued support of our innovative Board of Trustees, HCISD will continue to be a district of excellence.”
Every school in the district has an active PTA and membership continues to grow thanks to HCISD’s dedicated volunteers.
“PTA helps bring strength and unity to our campuses,” Dr. Cavazos said. “Active and continuous parent participation on our campuses provides opportunities within our schools and we are grateful for the support of HCISD’s PTAs as they were instrumental in the passing of the Tax Ratification Election.”
Texas PTA will be recognizing their Outstanding Educators of the Year at their statewide convention on July 22 in Houston.
