The regular meeting of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees was filled with awards and recognitions across the campuses.
The Music Department took center stage with recognitions of two former Gutierrez Middle School choir students, who were recognized for their involvement in the Texas Middle School Honor Choir this past summer.
Michael Lucio and Heather Delgadillo both performed at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio this past July with the honors choir that includes the states best middle school vocalists.
The board also recognized the two students former teachers and choral directors at GMS, Pam Briones and Sue Morrison, for their efforts in providing education and guidance.
Both students are now at Harlingen High School.
The board also recognized the Big Red Cardinal Band and its director Ronnie Rios at the meeting.
The HHS band received the top designation from the Texas Bandmasters Association this past year as the TBA Exemplary Band Program of the Year. The award, which is given to only one band this year, was presented to Rio at the July 25 TBA conference.
Also receiving recognition were the district’s four recipients of Readers’ Choice Awards from Valley Morning Star.
The winners were as follows:
- Harlingen High School South, Best High School
- Vela Middle School, Best Middle School
- Stuart Place Elementary, Best Elementary School
- Laney Davis of Coakley Middle School, Best Teacher
These awards are an annual event from VMS involving several categories that recognize organizations, businesses and individuals throughout Northern Cameron and Willacy counties.
