Harlingen Police Department and community leaders spread some Christmas cheer to 34 youngsters from the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District as part of the very first Shop with a Cop event held December 11.

The group of fifth-grade students from 17 elementary campuses were treated to a day of Christmas shopping at the Harlingen Target store and lunch followed by a game of bowling at Bass Pro Shops.

“Today was one of my brightest days in my first 11 months in Harlingen,” said Chief of Police Jeff Adickes. “I think that investment we are making as a police department is going to pay off later in life for these fifth-grade students. Who knows, we may have shopped with a future Harlingen police officer and not know it yet. It’s a really great group of kids. The school district here is a great partner to the police department, and this is just a great example of that.”

Officers guided students through store aisles where they had the chance to find the perfect item. A rewarding experience for all involved, the event also gave students the opportunity to get to know law enforcement officers as well as community leaders.

The event was made possible through sponsors including HPD Citizen’s Police Academy, FedEx, Target, Bass Pro Shops, Harlingen Fire Department, Dairy Queen, community contributions and many more.
