HCISD Senior Wins New Chevy Trax at Annual Attendance Celebration

Showing up every day paid off in a big way for Harlingen High School senior Giselle Benavides.

Benavides drove home in a brand-new 2026 Chevrolet Trax after being selected as the grand prize winner at the annual Drive for Perfect Attendance event, a beloved tradition made possible through a 13-year partnership with Gillman Chevrolet Harlingen.

The celebration brought together students, families, district leaders, and community members to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who achieved perfect attendance during the 2025-2026 school year. More than just a prize giveaway, the event celebrates the dedication, responsibility, and perseverance it takes to be present every day.

“I am happy because I just won a free car,” Benavides said moments after her name was announced. “I’m really excited. Thank you to Gillman for giving me this car and thank you to my parents for waking me up every day.”

In addition to the grand prize vehicle, students had opportunities to win $250 gift cards, a MacBook Pro, a Microsoft Surface Pro, and an iPad mini. Two students who achieved lifetime perfect attendance were also recognized with gift cards.

What began 13 years ago as a creative way to encourage attendance has grown into one of HCISD’s most anticipated end-of-year celebrations. Through its continued partnership with Gillman Chevrolet, the district has reinforced a simple but important message: every school day counts.

“Attendance is one of the strongest indicators of student success,” HCISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Kortan said. “This event is about more than the prizes. It is about celebrating students who demonstrated commitment, perseverance, and responsibility throughout the year. We are grateful to Gillman Chevrolet for helping us recognize and reward that dedication.”

More than 400 students qualified for this year’s event, including two students who maintained perfect attendance throughout their entire school careers.

“Congratulations to the student who won today,” Gillman Chevrolet Harlingen General Manager Ariben Cisneros said. “Students, keep going to school. You can win a Chevy Trax like this next year.”
