Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District’s Board of Trustees continues to make an impression at the state level as a shining model for excellence in leadership.

This week they were named as one of five school board finalists in the 2018 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards – the third time in four years the HCISD board is recognized as part of the program.

“We are honored to be recognized in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards as it represents our collective efforts as a school district in providing educational excellence,” said Board President George McShan. “In all my years on the board, I have watched our district grow and continue to carry the torch of quality education for our students. I am proud of the legacy we have built and am excited for what the future holds for Harlingen.”

This honor is designed to recognize school boards that have demonstrated real leadership in the community that it serves. H-E-B will award a total $5,000 to each of the recognized school boards, who will go on to compete for even greater cash prizes at the statewide level.

“We are super proud to have our Board of Trustees named as a finalist in the HEB Excellence in Education Awards. It is their leadership and support that has led us to the transformation we see today, and the changes we will see tomorrow on behalf of our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos. “This prestigious award exemplifies our board’s unrelenting commitment to each of our students and speaks volumes of their resolve in preparing them for global achievement.”

This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on May 6, 2018, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Houston. Winners will be recognized with cash prizes ranging from $2,500 to $100,000 for teachers, principals, school boards, early childhood centers, and school districts.

The statewide School Board winner, if one is selected, will receive $25,000 in the form of a grant to the school district they represent.

With more than $800,000 in cash prizes awarded annually to deserving teachers, principals, school districts and early childhood facilities and school boards, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.

H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas.
