The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees’ tradition of providing excellence in leadership is gaining attention at the state level.

The HCISD Board of Trustees were recognized as an Outstanding School Board as part of the 2015 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Program.

This is the second year in a row that H-E-B is recognizing five public school boards to highlight the importance of strong leadership at the board level. Along with their recognition as an outstanding school board, they are also considered a nominee in the Statewide School Board award.

“We are honored to be recognized in the HEB Excellence Awards as it represents our progress and achievements as a school district,” said Board of Trustee President Greg Powers. “We look forward to continuing our collective work to enhance the teaching and learning that takes place in our classrooms and propel our students further on the path toward global achievement.”

“To have our Board of Trustees named an Outstanding School Board in the HEB Excellence Award is a reflection of their outstanding work to advance our schools each day,” said Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos. “As we continue to work together on behalf of Public Education in Texas and the students of Harlingen, we will keep this honor close to mind as it symbolizes our past, present and future work at HCISD.”

This honor is designed to recognize a school board that has demonstrated real leadership in the community that it serves. H-E-B will award a total $5,000 to each of the recognized school boards, who will go on to compete for even greater cash prizes at the statewide level.

The Statewide School Board Winner, if one is selected, will receive $25,000 in the form of a grant to the school district they represent.

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards celebrates public school professionals whose leadership and dedication inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

With more than $800,000 in cash prizes awarded annually to deserving teachers, principals, school districts and early childhood facilities and school boards, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.

H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas.
