Harlingen CISD Board of Trustees approve hiring of new Harlingen High School Principal

The Harlingen CISD Board of Trustees is proud to announce the selection of a new principal for Harlingen High School.  During executive session at the regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, October 10th, trustees voted to hire Efrain Amaya to take the helm at the historic high school. Amaya was most recently employed by the McAllen school district as a middle school principal and has held roles as principal at their district alternative education campus, as well as director, assistant principal, teacher, and coach.

Mr. Amaya is a proud graduate of Mission High School and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas-Pan American. He also holds two master’s degrees from Grand Canyon University.

“I am a coach at heart, and I aspire to coach the staff and students, even parents, to reach their highest potential. Harlingen CISD is an incredible place to work and grow, and I look forward to joining the HHS Cardinal team to promote a structured, safe, and empowering learning environment,” said Amaya.

“I have full confidence in Efrain Amaya’s capabilities as a leader. He’s going to bring systems and processes to Harlingen High School to elevate teachers to be the very best educators who are excited to come to work every day, and his strategies will empower students with the tools to succeed. Mr. Amaya is going to get us on track to be one of the best high schools in the nation,” said Dr. J.A. Gonzalez, HCISD Superintendent of Schools.

Trustees are enthusiastic to have Mr. Amaya join HCISD. Harlingen High School’s previous principal, Nelda Alonzo, is now serving as the district’s Career and Technical Education Coordinator.

“We look forward to working alongside Mr. Amaya and his team of administrators at HHS to promote the highest level of success in each and every student,” said Dr. Belinda Reininger, Board President.
