Board of Trustees name Dr. Arturo Cavazos as HCISD’s Interim Superintendent

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees named Dr. Arturo Cavazos as the district’s Interim Superintendent during a special noon meeting on Sept. 20.

Dr. Cavazos will serve as Interim Superintendent until a permanent selection is made. He replaces Dr. Steve Flores as he embarks on his transition to Round Rock Independent School District as Superintendent of Schools.

“I want to thank the Board of Trustees for this opportunity to serve our district in the capacity of Interim Superintendent,” said Dr. Cavazos. “Important work lies ahead that will impact students, teachers and the entire HCISD community. I look forward to the challenge and opportunity.”

Dr. Cavazos has served as the district’s Deputy Superintendent for Transformation and School Support since 2009. During that time, he has been instrumental in leading the district’s current transformation. These components of transformation include the digital classroom initiative, implementation of Dual Language Academies, transforming the libraries into Information Literacy Centers (ILC), the implementation of campus Internet Cafes, the design of the Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy and future School of Health Professions.

He has served as an educator and administrator since 1987.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Cavazos is active in the community. He serves on the Boys and Girls Club board, Su Clinica Familiar board, South Texas Emergency Care Foundation board, and the local UIL Executive Committee. At the State level, Cavazos serves on the UIL Waiver Review board, State Academic Achievement Distinction Designation Committee (AADDC), the TASA Central Office Advisory Committee, and the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium.

“Dr. Cavazos has extensive executive experience as an administrator at HCISD, and as Interim Superintendent, he will immediately take on the responsibilities of superintendent,” said George McShan, Board of Trustees President. “He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and leading the district as we continue to move forward. The Board of Trustees will begin the process soon to name a permanent superintendent.”
