Harlingen South competitors advance to national Latin competition

A team of 15 Harlingen High School South Latin students attended the Texas State Junior Classical League – State Competition in Houston, Texas on April 22-23. Seven competitors advanced to the National Competition set for July 25-July 30 at Indiana State University.

The students advancing to Nationals are:

Callie LaMotte (Senior), Summa Cum Laude – Pentathlon
Cassandra Rubio (Senior), Magna Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 8th Place in Roman History
Jailene Gonzalez (Junior), Magna Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 5th Place in Latin Derivatives
Jose Gutierrez (Senior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 5th Place in Sight Recitation
Hemma Uzoh (Junior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 8th Place in Latin Literature
Cesar Chavez (Senior), 5th Place in Classical Art
Isabel Morales (Senior), 10th Place in Monochromatic Drawing

Other Academic Award recipients were:

Margarita Haro (Senior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon, & 11th Place in Ancient Geography & Civilization
Mia Aguirre (Senior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 11th Place in Mythology
Javier Lopez (Senior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 12th Place in Mottoes
Ashley Galvan (Senior), Cum Laude – Pentathlon & 12th Place in Reading Comprehension
Callie LaMotte (Senior), Grammar, 12th Place

Harlingen High School South also was one of the Sweepstake Winners in the Lower Division Category.

The Texas State Junior Classical League is part of the National Junior Classical League, an organization dedicated to promoting the study of Latin, Greek, and the classical world in high schools. The NJCL has over 50,000 members in the US, Canada, and Australia.

TSJCL sponsors a number of academic competitions for students of Latin, Greek, and classical studies. Each of the five areas has a convention in January or February, and the state convention is usually in April or late March. The competitions include academic contests, as well as artistic, musical, and athletic contests. TSJCL and NJCL also award a number of college scholarships and offer many other programs, such as the National Latin Honor Society, the JCL Pen Pal program, and the NJCL Creative Writing contest.
