HCISD Celebrates Record 118 AP Scholars

Harlingen CISD is celebrating a new milestone in academic excellence with the highest number of AP Scholars in district history.

During the April regular Board Meeting, HCISD recognized students who earned AP Scholar honors from the College Board, with several of the honorees, many now attending college, returning to be acknowledged in person. Kevin Garcia, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, presented the students to the Board of Trustees and shared that 118 HCISD students earned AP Scholar recognition this year.

To highlight the district’s continued momentum, Garcia noted the steady growth over the past two years. HCISD recorded 73 AP Scholars last year and 47 two years ago, making this year’s total an all-time district record.

“Recognizing 118 AP Scholars is a powerful reflection of what happens when students commit to excellence and our schools provide the support to match their ambition,” said Dr. Nolan Perez, HCISD Board President. “We are proud of these students and grateful to the teachers and families who helped make this record-setting achievement possible.”

Superintendent Dr. Veronica Kortan emphasized the broader impact of the achievement and the work happening across campuses to expand rigorous opportunities for students.

“This milestone is about more than a number, it’s about students rising to the challenge and believing they belong in rigorous academic spaces,” Kortan said. “Seeing our AP Scholar count grow from 47 to 73 to 118 in just two years shows the strength of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the momentum we are building across HCISD.”

HCISD congratulates every student who earned this distinction and thanks the teachers, counselors, and families who continue to support students as they pursue advanced coursework and prepare for college and future success.
