Harlingen CISD has been awarded $1 million in federal funding through the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s STOP School Violence Program to support its “Safe Schools, Bright Futures” initiative.
This highly competitive grant opportunity resulted in only 79 awards across the country, with Harlingen CISD being one of just five school districts in Texas—and the only district in South Texas—to receive this prestigious three-year grant.
The initiative, led by the district’s Guidance and Counseling Department, aims to enhance safety measures and address the mental health needs of students across the district’s twelve secondary schools.
Through this funding, Harlingen CISD aims to proactively prevent school violence and improve overall school climate by implementing comprehensive safety protocols, targeted educational programs for students, parent presentations, and specialized staff training. The grant will also enable the district to hire dedicated personnel to support these efforts.
“We are so grateful for the $1 million in funding awarded to Harlingen CISD through the BJA FY24 STOP School Violence Program,” said HCISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Veronica Kortan. “This grant is more than just financial support—it’s an affirmation of our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of every student in Harlingen CISD. Through our Safe Schools, Bright Futures initiative, we’re taking meaningful steps to address critical safety and mental health needs while fostering a positive and supportive climate on our secondary campuses. This funding is an investment in the hearts and minds of our students, staff, and parents, ensuring a secure and nurturing environment where every child can feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.”
Congressman Vicente Gonzalez expressed his unwavering support for HCISD’s efforts.
“Our children should not be afraid to go to school, and parents should feel confident that their children will be safe in the classroom,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “It’s our responsibility to provide them with a safe and supportive learning environment. That is why I support Harlingen Consolidated ISD’s initiative to actively prevent school violence.”
U.S. Senator John Cornyn also highlighted the significance of this funding.
“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is about mental health, school safety, and ensuring that the tragedy that struck Uvalde was not in vain,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I’m grateful this law is giving schools across our state the resources needed to keep students, staff, and teachers safe.”
Harlingen CISD is excited about the opportunities this grant brings to the district and looks forward to collaborating with staff, parents, and the community to implement the project effectively. By enhancing the district’s capacity to meet the mental health and safety needs of students, this initiative will ensure every student feels supported, safe, and empowered to succeed.
