Gutierrez Middle School of Arts and Sciences has made district history, earning seven State Champion titles at the Texas Middle School State Speech and Debate Tournament held April 18 at Dr. Cano Freshman Academy.
This achievement marks the first time Harlingen CISD has reached this milestone, highlighting the strength of the district’s academic and fine arts programs and the dedication of its students and staff.
The following students were named State Champions:
- Leah Domar, 8th Grade — Declamation
- Lauren Elliott, 8th Grade — Dramatic Interpretation
- Yaretzi Carrasco, 7th Grade — Duet Improvisation
- Violet Carrasco, 7th Grade — Duet Improvisation
- Christian Corales, 6th Grade — Poetry Interpretation
- Lauren Elliott, 8th Grade — Program Oral Interpretation (Repeat State Champion)
- Charlie Strohmeyer, 8th Grade — Prose Interpretation
