The Harlingen High School South Mighty Hawk Band earned the title of Class 3A Regional Champions at the Bands of America Regional Championships held in McAllen on September 20.
The band also earned outstanding Music Performance and Outstanding General Effect in their class. This marks the first time in history that Harlingen South has been named a Band of America Class Champion.
Class size is based on a national average of students enrolled in grades 10-12 at high schools throughout the country.
Harlingen South also advanced to the final round of competition of the Top 12 bands, where they earned 3rd place overall. Bands competing in the event consisted of groups from Del Rio to Laredo to the entire Rio Grande Valley.
The Mighty Hawk Band performed their show “The Butterfly Effect.” The 4-movement production featured the Music: Renaissance by Tapia de Veer, Air Waltz by Davis, Ara Batur by Ros, & Promise by Bergersen.
Drum Majors for the Mighty Hawk Band are seniors Mayte Franco and Gael Castillo. Band Directors are Ronnie Rios, Melanie Kulaga, Laura Benavides, Victor Garza & Raul Liendo. Guard tech is Antonio Hernandez, and the student teacher is Oscar Cantu.
Judges for the Bands of America Regional Championships are selected from a pool of professional adjudicators in music, effect, visual analysis, and design from throughout the country.
“We are incredibly proud of our Mighty Hawk Band for this historic achievement,” said HCISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Kortan. “This moment is a celebration of not only our band students, but also their directors, families, and our community.”
The band will next compete at the La Joya Regional Marching Championships on October 4. Pigskin is set for Saturday, October 18 in San Benito.
