Harlingen South Journalism Class Awarded J. Gonzalez Law Firm’s Legacy of Learning Grant

Mary Ann Garcia’s journalism class at Harlingen High School South was selected as one of the recipients of the J. Gonzalez Law Firm’s Legacy of Learning Giveaway, receiving a $1,000 grant as part of the firm’s $20,000 initiative to support education across the Rio Grande Valley.

The program was created to help local schools and educators enhance student learning.

“I was a teacher before I started my law firm because education builds futures,” said J. Gonzalez, founding attorney of the J. Gonzalez Law Firm. “We created this giveaway to respond directly to the many requests we get from students, teachers, and parents working to make education accessible and meaningful.”

Garcia said the award will make a lasting impact on her students.

“I am truly honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of this grant,” she said. “The support will have a significant impact on the Harlingen South Journalism Program, providing extended opportunities for our students and helping us move toward a more modern, innovative approach to journalism education.”

The grant funds will be used to purchase new cameras, lighting equipment, and other essential tools to support students in covering school events and developing their journalism skills.

“Meeting Attorney J. Gonzalez and learning that he was once an educator was especially meaningful,” she added. “His understanding of the importance of having the right tools in the classroom underscores how transformative this grant will be.”
