Teacher of the Week: Silva finds her true calling at HCISD

“Every child is different,” said Jennifer Silva. “They have individual needs and we need to make sure we are meeting those needs for them to be successful.”

That statement best sums up the philosophy Silva holds in her classroom ever day at Jefferson Elementary School. Going on her 12th year teaching, she’s taught students from Kindergarten to fifth grade, but now as a Special Education Resources instructor for the campus, she believes she has found her true calling.

“This is what I was meant to do,” said Silva. “I love my students like if they were my own children. I have high expectations for them.”

A product of HCISD schools, Silva has known she wanted to be an educator since her days at Long Elementary School. She recalls playing with “school” her two younger siblings and always wanting to take the teaching role, she said

After Long Elementary, she attended Vernon and Memorial Middle School, Harlingen High School, and Texas State University before beginning her career in education at Jefferson. While at Jefferson, she has been able to find her second family, which are the students and staff at the campus.

“Jefferson is my home,” said Silva. “We genuinely feel like we are family, and our students are our children. If anyone needs help we are always there to support them.”

When not with her students in the classroom, she takes any opportunity she can to hit the road with her daughter.

“One day we will decide to hit the road to the West Coast and then just hop in the suburban and go,” Silva said.
