Two Harlingen High School teams placed in the top ten at the first SeaPerch Competition hosted by Hispanic Engineering, Science & Technology Week (HESTEC) on Sept. 28.

HHS pre-engineering teachers Gabe Valdez and Paul Tenison sponsored the two teams, which finished third and seventh, respectively.

To compete, each team had to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). They were required to use low-cost, easily accessible parts and follow a guideline that focuses on basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

The U.S. Navy sponsored the competition and a total of 24 teams from across the Rio Grande Valley participated

  1. Excellent engineering talent at its best. These kids will go a long way with classes such as these paving the way towards rewarding careers. We need more teachers like Mr. Valdez and Mr. Tenison.
