HCISD chess teams earn top marks at regional competition

 

The chess teams at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District continued to make their mark this competition season by earning top prizes at the Los Fresnos High School Regional Chess Tournament on Feb. 9.

The Early College High School, Vernon Middle School, Long Elementary School, Dishman Elementary School and Sam Houston Elementary School chess teams took home prizes during the regional match. Individually, ECHS students Isaiah Rodriguez and Amadeo Drysdale were awarded eighth and 17th place in the High School JV Division, respectively.

The Vernon chess team placed 10th  in the JV Middle School Division. Individually, Vernon seventh grade student Xochiel Grandin placed 31st.

The Long chess team was awarded 15th place in the K-3 division. The Dishman chess team was awarded 14th place in the K-1 Division.

The Sam Houston’s teams were awarded trophies in three divisions. The teams earned third in K1, fifth in K3 and 11th in K5.

Individually, Sam Houston students Sabian Nieto and Michael Casas were awarded third place and ninth place in the Kindergarten division, respectively. James Cowan was awarded 21st place.

In additional divisions, Jacob Fox placed fifth in the K-3 division, and Carlos De Leon placed thirtieth.

Gabriella Serrana earned 24th place and Domynich placed 36th place in the K-5 division.

Over 150 students from across the Rio Grande Valley were present at the academic competition, and the schools qualified to advance to the state chess competition in McAllen on March 23.

Most students in the competition have been actively competing in chess for less than a year, and have prepared for competitions with intense after school practices.

K3 Championship –  14th place out of 24 schools

 

Dishman Elementary School

Team Standings:

K1 Championship –  14th place out of 24 schools

 

 

Sam Houston

Team Standings:

K1 Championship –  3rd place out of 24 schools

K3 Championship – 5th place out of 21 schools

K5 Championship – 11th place out of 27 schools

 

Individual Standings K1 Championship:

Sabian Nieto – 3rd place out 152 participants

Michael Casas – 9th place out of 152 participants

James Cowan – 21st place out of 152 participants

 

Individual Standings K3 Championship:

Jacob Fox – 5th place out of 162 participants

Carlos de Leon – 30th place out of 162 participants

 

Individual Standings K5 Championship:

Gabriella Serrano – 24th place out of 190 participants

Domynick Jaure – 36th place out of 190 participants
