HCISD celebrates International Walk to School Day

Students, parents and staff members from across the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District walked to class to support International Walk to School Day on Oct. 3.

Before the school day started, participants were given the opportunity to gather as a group and walk safely to campus. While walking, students were able to show their school spirit with signs and chants.

The event promotes childhood physical activity and brings awareness to the importance of pedestrian safety.

During the walk, community leaders and parents had the option of determining the “walkability” of their community by using a checklist.

“It provides us with a perspective of how safe the area is for students to walk,” said Mike Ledezma, a physical education instructor at Ben Milam Elementary. “There are many factors that can come into play. We want to address any potential issues regarding the safety of our students.”

This will be the second year HCISD participates in the event.
