Future campus leaders at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District celebrated the completion of a program aimed at developing their leadership skills on Dec. 5.

Seven teachers, counselors, instructional facilitators and professionals from across HCISD graduated from the Aspiring Assistant Principal Academy (AAPA).

“It’s a wonderful program for developing campus administrators,” said Rosie Leal, head counselor at Harlingen High School and graduate of the AAPA. “Now, I can see the strengths in others and help them build their skills. It develops the skills needed to help our campuses succeed.”

The academy is designed for school leaders to meet once a month for professional development, and to learn about the structure of the public school district, said Loretta Sanchez, Director for Human Resources. The goal of the curriculum is to integrate learning opportunities that will maximize assistant principal effectiveness.

Marking this shift in their administrative careers, members of the school board and administration shared their hopes for the futures of the graduates and the importance their participation holds for their campus.

“You are the future of our school district and will play an integral role in the success of our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Arturo Cavazos. “Take what you’ve learned during your time in the academy and share it with your campus. Make every day an opportunity to improve the lives of our students and continue the tradition of excellence our district holds.”

Participants in the academy aspire to advance or have already been promoted into assistant administrative positions. To enroll, they had to go through an intense application process. The cohort started the academy in February 2013.

This is the fourth cohort that has completed the academy.
