Sam Houston, Treasure Hills earn top marks at chess tournament

Using their strategic skills to outsmart the competition, the Sam Houston Elementary and Treasure Hills Elementary chess teams had an outstanding performance at the Ed Downs Chess Tournament in San Benito on Dec. 7.

Overall, the Sam Houston team placed first in the K-3 and K-5 division, third in the K-12 Division and fifth in the K-1 Division. The Treasure Hills team placed fifth in the K-3 Division and seventh in the K-5 Division.

Individually, Sam Houston chess player Julian Gonzalez placed second in K-1. Teammates Gianelli Serrano, Alvaro Nieto, Maxx Perez, Rory Jimenez and James Cowan placed first, second, fifth, sixth, and eighth in K-3, respectively.

In K-5, Christian Cruz and Ernesto Garcia Jr. from Sam Houston Elementary placed fourth and fifth place, respectively. Ty Ramirez from Treasure Hills Elementary placed 10th respectively.

In the oldest division, K-12, Sam Houston student Oscar Cano placed fourth and Jacob Fox placed 10th.
