Over 100 students from across the Rio Grande Valley attended TEPSA’s (Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association) Leaders ‘R’ Us Workshop hosted at Zavala Elementary on Friday, October 17.

Brownsville ISD, La Feria ISD, Santa Rosa ISD, San Benito CISD and Harlingen CISD were among the districts represented at the conference.

At the workshop, students discussed the responsibilities of a leader and the importance of being able to work as a team in their student council groups. The day’s activities allowed them to identify their personal strengths as a leader and areas in which they could grow.

“The purpose of this event is to our train our students so that they can be enthusiastic leaders that encourage other students to participate,” said Sara Hayward HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed) teacher at Bowie Elementary. “Our student council groups need to be models of their schools. They must show the other kids that this is what student council is and what student council does.”

Students also learned about their mission as a student council member, and different ways to make new students feel welcome at their schools.
