The Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South Varsity Golf Programs were on par at the District tournament on April 9.

The HHSS boys’ team won the team competition with a two round score of 633.  The win earned them their third consecutive District Championship, and their fifth championship in the past six years. Individually, Victor Sandoval was awarded second place and Justin Kitten finished third place. For the HHSS girls team, Amanda Alvarez came in fifth overall.

Both the HHS’s boys and girls’ team finished second place. Nicolas Rivas, junior, who was awarded first place honors for District 32-5A, led the HHS men’s team. Also contributing to the team were Juniors Colin Eubanks, Bobby Vargas, James Sanchez and Sophomore Caleb Castillo.

Leading the ladies was sophomore, Morgan McClaugherty, who captured first place for the District 32-5A tournament. Other integral members of the team were fellow sophomore Samantha Mendiola and freshmen Sarah Luciano, Terah Vargas and Natalia Samarakoon.

With their awards, the HHS and HHSS teams earned a spot in the Regional Tournament in San Antonio on April 15.

This marks the first time in over 15 years that HHS has earned a trip to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Golf Regionals competition.
