Students at Harlingen High School South are being recognized for their literary talents.

Students Maricruz Espinoza, Sarah Cano, Erica Gonzalez, and Jonathan Ruiz are finalists in the Latino History Essay Contest. Fellow student Adam Rudd is also a Barbara Jordan Essay Contest. The students’ essays were selected as one of the top 12 finalists in the state.

They are expected to receive the final results during the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Academic Meet on May 22 at the University of Texas at Austin. The top six in each essay contest will receive medals, and the top three will receive scholarships.

The essays required students to research a person or program that had a positive influence for either Hispanics or African Americans and write about how they had made a difference.

The students are under the direction of HHSS English teacher Deborah Vaughn.
