HHS Jazz Ensembles hit the right notes at music festivals

Four Harlingen High School Jazz Ensembles earned high marks at the 17th Annual Palo Alto Jazz Festival in San Antonio and the 4th Annual Georgetown Jazz Festival in Austin.

All four HHS Jazz Ensembles received a superior rating for their performance, and 1st place in their respective class. The HHS Honors Jazz Ensemble was named the overall Grand Champion of the Georgetown Festival. It is the first year HHS has participated in the festival. During their pursuit of excellence, HHS received a perfect score of “100” by legendary jazz drummer Butch Miles.

HHS competed against high schools from SA McCollum, SA Edison, SA O’Connor, SA Southwest, SA Clark, SA Brandeis, Austin Bowie, Marble Falls, Austin Anderson, Del Valle, Stony Point, Stephen F. Austin, and Leander.

Several students were also recognized for their performance and named to the “All-Star” Jazz Band. Kayla Juarez, alto sax, Cody Gonzalez, tenor sax, Aaron Gonzalez, tenor sax, Antulio Rodriguez, bari-sax, TJ Saenz, trumpet, Krystal Moya, trumpet, Sabrina Garcia, trumpet, David Perez, trumpet, Aaron Mata, trombone, Bianca Lopez, baritone, Juan Maldonado, piano, Nick Canas, guitar, Carter Mink, bass, Adrian Vitela, bass, Art Flores, bass, Israel Yanez, drums, Wesley Barfield.

The ensembles will conclude their competitions at the McAllen Jazz Festival on April 13th.
