The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District and the Harlingen Public Library joined forces to promote literacy on May 11.
HCISD and the HPL hosted the second annual Harlingen Book Festival for the community’s students and parents at the city’s library. The festival is aimed to promote literacy and the arts in South Texas.
Throughout the day, the over 500 community members that attended the festival had the opportunity to meet regional authors and community leaders including author Rickey Pittman, award-winning bagpiper Lary Fowler, and featured speaker Cara Brookins. Volunteers also offered a variety of presentations related to the importance of reading and the benefit of writing.
Literacy promoting door prizes were also raffled off at the end of the day.
