HCISD and the Harlingen community celebrate Texas Parents Day

Members of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District community gathered at Pendelton Park to celebrate Texas Parents Day 2012 on Aug. 24.

The event provided games and refreshments to welcome parents and students to the new school year, and gave parents the unique opportunity to get to know HCISD administration and staff in a family-friendly environment.

“It’s a day that we celebrate the parents, families and students coming into our school district,” said Dr. Jose Luis Cavazos, director of parental involvement and dropout prevention. “Everyone that attends gets to enjoy the day and socialize before the school year begins.”

HCISD staff, local public safety officials and medical representatives were on hand passing out informational materials to parents and students regarding the variety of programs aimed at helping students and parents get ready for the school year.

“It is important for parents to get familiar with all the programs that Harlingen has to offer so they know what is available to them throughout the year,” Cavazos said.

The HCISD parental involvement department coordinates the event ever year, and event sponsors included Valley Morning Star, Valley Baptist Medical Center, Boggus Ford, United Health Care Community Plan, Rudy Garza Funeral Home, Don Beto’s Child Nutrition Program Documentation & Services, Harlingen Family Dentistry, P.C., KEY Mortgage, Tito Resendez State Farm Insurance, Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, Las Vegas Mexican Restaurant and Quality Rental Service by Joe Fonseca.

“I commend our parental involvement division because they connect our students, parents and community together,” Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores said. “We encourage all parents to be involved in their child’s education, and when connected with our community our schools our children will succeed.”

Texas Parents Day was created by the Texas legislature in 1999 to celebrate the Texas family and emphasize the importance of parents’ roles in their children’s education. HCISD has hosted the event every year since its creation.
