Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy pathway showcase

As eighth grade students at HCISD get ready to start their first year at the new Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy, they share their selections for the career pathway they will focus on.

At the Cano Academy, students are given the opportunity to select one of five academic schools that will serve as programs of study throughout their high school education. Pathways include, Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Health Science.

Allen Leal, Coakley Middle School

“I’m entering the school of STEM next year. I want to be an engineer, and I’m interested in robotics. I’m excited to be in the school of STEM, and meet new friends.”

Kylie Torres, Coakley Middle School

“I selected the Health Science pathway, because that’s what I see myself doing in the future. My dad is a doctor, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. It’s gong to be a cool experience, because I know it’s not something that everyone gets to do. It helps you find out what career is for you.”

“I selected STEM, because it’s related to mechanics. In the future, I want to work for Ford or Chevy. I think being in the STEM program will give me a head start going into college.”

“Next year, I will be in the STEM pathway, because I want to become a Marine Biologist. I think I’m going to get experience, and it’s going to come in handy later on when I go to college. I feel like I’ll be more prepared for the future by starting now.”

“I chose Health Science, because I want to be an athletic trainer when I graduate from college. I want to get an early start, and being in the Health Science School will benefit me because they are going to talk about the subject.”

“Liberal Arts is the pathway I’m going to start next year. I’m interested in going into law, and want to get real world experience. I’m hoping, with my pathway, to gain confidence and get ahead.”

“I’m going into the School of Business, because there are so many options that come with it. I think I’ll know more by the time I graduate from high school, and really have a great start going into college. I’m also excited to get to experience all of the technology the campus will have. It will be like a college.”

“STEM was area I chose to be in at the academy,” said Duffy. “I like science, math and engineering. It’s exciting to be able to focus on those things next year. I think it will give me some of the skills I might need for future jobs.”

“I chose the STEM pathway to specialize in engineering, because I want to be an engineer when I grow up. I’ve always had an interest in engineering and I think the STEM program will give me an idea of what to expect when I’m older.”

“Next year, I’ll be in the school of Liberal Arts. There are so many things you can study in liberal arts, and I want use my experience to find out what I’m passionate about.”

“For my freshman year, I chose the school of Health Science, because I want to be a surgeon. I’m excited to see what the classes will offer, and I think it’s going to help me get ready for the rest of high school and college.”

“I’m going to be in the school of STEM next year. Math comes easy to me, and I see myself going more into engineering. The classes are going to help me learn more and be ahead of everyone else when they are just starting later on.”

“I picked the school of education. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and work with kids. The school will give us the opportunity to get our priorities straight and see how it’s going to be later on. I’ll be better off in the end, because I picked a pathway that’s going to give me experience I can use in the future.”

“I want to be a surgeon when I get older so I chose Health Science as my pathway. I want to help other people. Next year, I ‘ll start learning about what goes into being a surgeon, and it will prepare me for when I’m at medical school in the future.”

“I will start in the School of Business next year. I feel like it’s a great opportunity, and will help me understand how to open my own clothing line in the future. What I like about it is that you can do almost anything with an education in business.”

“I picked Health Science, because I want to be a pediatrician when I get older. I want to work with kids. My grandma and mom work in the medical field, and it’s helped me see what I want to do.
