Board approves principals for Vela and Austin, assistant principals approved at two campuses

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Magda Gonzalez as the Principal at Austin Elementary and Tony Gonzales as the Principal of Vela Middle School during a special meeting on July 29.

Also approved was Lazaro Moreno as Assistant Principal of Harlingen High School, Eliza Jensen as Coakley Middle School Assistant Principal, Schawn Wreden as ELA Content Specialist, Audra Rodriguez as Social Studies Content Specialist and Marisa Landero as Special Programs/Multi-language Specialists (6-12).

Gonzalez will serve as principal at Austin Elementary after serving the campus as an Assistant Principal since 2012. She has worked in education since 1991 as an elementary teacher and Assistant Principal at Bonham.

Gonzales comes to Vela Middle School after serving as the Principal of South Garland High School since 2010. He has worked in education since 1994 as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal of Burleson County Alternative Schools and Cotulla High School.

Moreno comes to HCISD after serving as assistant principal of Los Fresnos High School since 2010. Having worked in education since 2007, Moreno previously served as a Spanish teacher at Santa Rosa High School.

Jensen is appointed to Coakley Middle School after serving the district’s Staff Development Specialist since 2011. She has worked in education since 1997 as a Language Arts teacher at Coakley and Gutierrez Middle School, a G.T Facilitator, Instructional Facilitator at Vela Middle School and ELAR Curriculum Specialists.

Wreden has worked in education since 1993 as an English Teacher at Harlingen High School, a GT Facilitator at Marshall High School in San Antonio, and presently as the ACE Director for HCISD.

Rodriguez has worked in education since 1994 as a social studies teacher at Vernon Middle School, at GT Facilitator at Coakley, Gutierrez and Vela, and as Vernon’s Instructional Facilitator.

Landero has worked in education since 2001 as a bilingual teacher at Walnut Bend Elementary and school counselor at Barrick Elementary School in Houston. She had previously served Harlingen High School as their school counselor since 2010.
