Board approves location for School of Health Professions, sidewalk construction at Memorial Middle School

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved two proposals that will assist in the district’s transformation during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

First, the board approved a location for the School of Health Professions. The facility will be constructed at 21st Street and Rio Hondo Road. The property is 25 acres, and is located near Memorial Middle School.

“Establishing a location for the School of Health Professions symbolizes that we as a district are continuing forward with this project,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores. “The School of Health Professions is a major component in giving our community schools of choice.”

HCISD will fund the $13.9 million facility through the Qualified School Construction Bonds program. The firm Rike-Ogden-Figueroa-Allex will provide architectural services for the facility.

The School of Health Professions is scheduled to open in Fall 2014.

“A committee has been assembled to research and visit similar schools across the state and assist the district in designing a state of the art school,” said Dr. Arturo Cavazos, deputy superintendent for transformation and school support. “Construction will be scheduled accordingly to meet that deadline.”

The board also approved the proposal to provide construction materials required to build sidewalks on Rio Hondo Road and 13th Street, which lead to Memorial Middle School.

The proposal was created after a meeting was held with the City of Harlingen Public Works Director and the City Engineer regarding the possible construction of sidewalks.

The resolution was for the city to provide the labor and equipment necessary to construct the sidewalks and for the school district to provide the materials.

The sidewalks will be constructed on the south side of Rio Hondo Road from 13th Street to 25th Street, and on 13th Street from Rio Hondo Road to Marshall Street.

The approximate costs of materials will be $40,000. Construction is expected to take place at the beginning of October. The project is estimated to take six to eight weeks to complete.

“HCISD continues to work with the city for the benefit of our students and their safety,” said Oscar Tapia, assistant superintendent for district operations. “The sidewalks developed as a result of this partnership will promote a safer walking environment for our students traveling to and from Memorial Middle School.”

  1. First, the board approved a location for the School of Health Professions. The facility will be constructed at the corner of Rio Hondo Road and North 13th Street on school district owned property. The property is 25 acres, and is located near Memorial Middle School.
I am trying to figure this location out, as there is no free land at this intersection the corner of RioHOnda Road and 13th, I only see some land that looks like ti might be around 25 acres right next to the new middle memorial school??? thanks really want to know where this school is going
also would like to know how many employees will this school employ??
    thanks

  2. Thanks for the question! Sorry for the delay in response. The new school is not ON rio hondo road. It’s across from the school on 13th street on the northwest corner of new Memorial Middle School’s property. The road is currently blocked as we work with the city to finalize it. Thanks!
