Students at Gutierrez Middle School and Dishman Elementary School opened their ears to a bluegrass experience on Jan. 11.

The Abrams Brothers, a bluegrass trio from Canada, treated Gutierrez music students and Dishman fifth grade students to an intimate concert on both campuses. The group entertained students with their original songs and a couple of special covers for the event. The audience remained captivated throughout the performance, but shook their silence once the group offered the opportunity for a question and answers session.

The Harlingen Concert Association (HCA), who sponsors musical events around the community, brought down the trio as a way to showcase quality entertainment to young minds. The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Music Department worked with HCA to arrange the concerts for the campuses.

With the showcase, their charge is to promote musical interest and encourage students to join music programs. For the students at Dishman and Gutierrez, the performance was a perfect way to emphasize the opportunities music could bring.

The next HCA sponsored performance will be from Ann Fontanella, a classical violinist, on Jan. 31. Fontanella will perform at Wilson and Rodriguez Elementary School.
